9 Unique Uses for Botox

Young woman received Botox injections in her arm pit area.

When it comes to Botox, the first thing that comes to mind is preventing fine lines and wrinkles on the face. And while that is the most popular use of Botox, the injectable can be used in a number of unexpected ways – fixing everything from a gummy smile to excessive sweating.

If you haven’t already, take a look at our previous blog post for a run down on the basics of Botox and then read below for 10 procedures that may not be as widely known.

  1. Brow Lift

Not ready to commit to a face lift? A brow lift can improve the appearance quickly with no downtime. Injections between the eyebrows relax the muscles underneath, allowing forehead muscles to pull the eyebrows up, creating a more lifted look.

  1. Lip Flip

An alternative to achieving a fuller lip to traditional filler, this procedure has Botox injected into the upper lip to relax the muscles and “flip” your lip upward.

  1. Smoothing Wrinkles and Lines in the Lower Face and Neck

Often, filler is focused on the upper two-thirds of the face, but it can also be used to smooth chin wrinkles in tandem with dermal fillers to create a younger and smoother look, as well as smooth the look of vertical bands or lines in the neck.

  1. Facial Slimming

Botox can be used to contour the face when injected into the masseter muscle, creating a more slim look. Facial slimming is a very popular and effective treatment that can be achieved with injections in the masseter muscle, which can also help prevent jaw clenching and teeth grinding.

  1. Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Injections of Botox into the underarm area block a chemical in the body that activates the sweat glands and can help reduce under-arm sweating by more than 80 per cent, according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

  1. Reducing and Eliminating Migraines

For those suffering from chronic migraines more than 15 days a month with headaches lasting longer than four hours a day, Botox has shown positive results in reducing and even eliminating migraines. Botox prevents the chemicals – called neurotransmitters – that carry pain signals from your brain to reach your nerve endings around your head and neck.

  1. Shoulder Contouring

Creating a more slim and defined shoulder line can be achieved through injections of Botox into the shoulder – or more specifically, the trapezius muscle – which decreases the muscle volume and size.

  1. Muscle Spasms (Dystonia)

Botox injections have been approved for helping treat blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. The injections help reduce the involuntary muscle contractions and alleviate the discomfort caused by them. These treatments are often given by sub-specialists, such as a neurologist or a rehab physician.

  1. Overactive Bladder

Tired of running to the washroom? Botox injections can make a big difference. Through a cystoscope placed in the bladder, Botox is injected into numerous sites. The procedure can be done under light sedation and takes roughly ten minutes. This treatment is often offered by a urologist.
